Dog Receives Life-Saving Kidney Transplant From Her Puppy

A dog named Star, who was left abandoned on the side of the road three years ago with her litter of 13 puppies is getting a new lease on life after receiving a kidney donation from one of those puppies. Star was brought to Murphy Animal Hospital in High Ridge, Missouri in bad shape. She was malnourished, dehydrated and veterinarians discovered that she had advanced kidney failure.

Miraculously, Star managed to make a recovery and was adopted by the owner of the animal hospital while her surviving puppies were all adopted. But, a few years later, Star's symptoms returned as her kidney began to fail again. Her only option was an organ transplant.

Just like in humans, dogs require a perfect match in order to receive an organ donation. Luckily for Star, most of her puppies stayed with local families, and one of them jumped at the chance to help out.

Jenny Murray, the owner of Star's puppy Elsa, checked with her family, who was more than willing to let Elsa help.

“This is Elsa’s chance to save her mom, and they’re like, ‘Oh so she’s a hero!’” Murray told Fox 2.

The two dogs underwent successful transplant surgery in October and both are expected to live long and healthy lives.
