Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin shared that his family was rescued by swift water rescue teams and the Texas National Guard during last week’s flooding in Texas. The flooding affected Hunt, Texas, where the governor’s family and some friends were staying.

According to the Washington Post, First Lady Suzanne Youngkin was among those trapped at their property near the Guadalupe River. Speaking to reporters on July 8, Youngkin said, “By the grace of God, my family was safe. There were moments when they were not.”

The Youngkins reportedly visit the Texas property several times a year for vacations. Youngkin flew to Texas on Friday and was offered an airlift to evacuate his family but declined, telling officials to prioritize rescuing campers and others in more urgent danger first.

He also highlighted his wife’s family’s long history in the area, spanning over 80 years, and described the flooding’s impact as heartbreaking. “The loss of life is just shocking,” he said.

The governor expressed his sincere thanks to the rescue crews and National Guard members who saved his family and continue to assist those affected by the floods.
