VA DMV Launches Program to Help Drivers with Autism During Traffic Stops

The Virginia DMV has introduced a new program aimed at improving communication between law enforcement and drivers with autism during traffic stops.

Called the Blue Envelope Program, it offers a clear visual signal to officers that the driver might require extra patience or a different way of communicating.

When shown during a stop, the blue envelope indicates that the driver is on the autism spectrum and may need information delivered in a specific manner.

Inside the envelope, officers find helpful tips, such as speaking clearly and directly, giving the driver more time to understand, and being aware of sensory triggers like flashing lights or loud noises.

Virginia residents can get these envelopes for free at DMV customer service centers without needing to show proof. Centers are available at 2055 Abbey Road in Charlottesville, plus locations in Waynesboro and Culpeper.

The program is voluntary, confidential, and created through state legislation. Caregivers may also request envelopes for those with autism.
