For Olivia Rodrigo, fame has brought plenty of pinch-me moments — but few compare to realizing she once wrote about something before actually living it.
During a recent appearance on the Music Makes Us podcast, Rodrigo shared that as a child she wrote fan fiction about One Direction, making her eventual real-life hangout with Harry Styles feel especially surreal.
“I used to write One Direction fan fiction when I was in elementary school,” Rodrigo said. Years later, after meeting Styles as a fellow chart-topping artist, the two spent time together walking around and grabbing tea. “I got home and I was like, ‘What the f—?’ I feel like I wrote that in a fan fiction, and now I’ve lived it.”
Rodrigo laughed as she reflected on how unimaginable the moment would have seemed to her younger self. “If I told 10-year-old Olivia, she’d be like, ‘Shut the f— up, you’re lying.’”
She also described Styles as “so sweet,” adding to the long list of artists who have supported her since her breakout success in 2021. On the podcast, Rodrigo said she’s been encouraged by several longtime idols, including Lorde and Jack White — the latter of whom she admired so much that she once ran a fan account dedicated to The White Stripes.
Rodrigo last released an album in 2023, when Guts debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Styles, meanwhile, has largely stayed out of the spotlight since releasing Harry’s House in 2022, which later won Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards.
Though fans haven’t seen much of Styles musically in recent years, he’s popped up occasionally in 2025 — including appearances at international marathons and in social media posts shared by Ben Klock, alongside friends and rumored girlfriend Zoë Kravitz.
