Lizzo is speaking out after violence linked to immigration enforcement shook Minneapolis, a city where she once lived while launching her music career.

In a video shared on social media Wednesday (Jan. 28), Lizzo addressed the emotional toll of watching the situation unfold from afar. After speaking with local organizers, she encouraged followers who are able to support relief efforts.

“I know it can feel helpless watching all of this unfold on our phones,” she said, “but after talking to people on the ground, here are a few ways you can help.”

She promoted a GoFundMe campaign for a family whose father was detained by ICE and needs financial assistance for bail and legal fees. Lizzo also spotlighted local businesses and community spaces that have become hubs for mutual aid during the crisis.

The singer made it clear that her message was directed at people with financial privilege. “I’m never asking anyone who’s struggling to give,” she explained. “I’m trying to reach the people who actually have the means to help.”

Becoming emotional, Lizzo reflected on Minneapolis’ long history of racial injustice and resilience. She referenced past tragedies involving Philando Castile, Jamar Clark, and George Floyd, saying the city has repeatedly faced hardship and responded with strength.

“My heart goes out to Minneapolis,” she said. “The injustice happens there, but I’ve also seen the community rise up every single time.”

Throughout January, ICE has maintained a strong presence in the city, triggering protests nationwide. Two civilians were fatally shot by agents this month. The administration of Donald Trump has labeled both incidents as self-defense, though critics continue to question those claims.

Soon after addressing Minneapolis, Lizzo shared another emotional update following the death of Los Angeles activist Shirley Raines, founder of Beauty 2 The Streetz. Raines was widely known for helping unhoused residents on Skid Row.

Lizzo remembered her as a source of constant encouragement. “She never turned her back on me,” she said tearfully. “She would always send me love and never ask for anything in return.”

Calling Raines “one of a kind,” Lizzo added that her work and spirit will continue through the lives she touched.
